Event Photography at CENTREPIECE, Melbourne Park

01 / Overview

Natural light is the rarest commodity in conference venues, and CENTREPIECE at Melbourne Park has it in quantities that still surprise us. The Grand Hall — 1,958 square metres, eight-metre ceilings, completely pillarless — fills with daylight and frames the city skyline through its glazing. Most convention spaces make a photographer manufacture atmosphere. This one hands it over at the door.

A Grand Hall that shoots like a daylight studio

Capacity runs to 1,430 for a banquet, 2,080 theatre-style and 2,400 for cocktails, with operable walls splitting the space in half or into thirds for multi-stream programs. For daytime conferences we barely touch artificial light: delegates photographed against the glazing look like they're in a magazine spread, not a convention hall. The eight-metre ceiling and full rigging capability mean production designers go big here — suspended staging, projection, sculptural installs — and we compose wides that let those builds carry the frame.

When the walls close for concurrent sessions, we treat each zone as its own room with its own white-balance reference, because daylight zones and stage-lit zones behave very differently through a lens.

Terraces, pre-function space and the skyline portrait

The 750-square-metre pre-function area handles arrivals, sponsor activations and headshot booths without crowding, and the outdoor terrace looks straight over the Melbourne CBD — our default location for speaker portraits and team photos. Late afternoon is the slot to fight for: the sun drops behind the skyline and gives you fifteen minutes of backlit, glass-and-gold frames that no ballroom can produce. Ask us to build it into your run sheet and we'll marshal the group so it costs your program five minutes, not thirty.

Precinct context helps too. CENTREPIECE sits inside Melbourne Park beside Rod Laver Arena, a walk across the footbridge from the CBD, so multi-venue programs and offsite dinners connect without buses.

Multi-camera video and streaming at CENTREPIECE

The venue was purpose-built for broadcast-era events, with integrated audio-visual systems and a central logistics hub offering direct vehicle access — car reveals and large exhibits drive straight in, and we've learned to have a camera rolling when they do. For hybrid conferences we run multi-camera capture in the Grand Hall, take a slides feed from the AV team, and stream a broadcast-grade program to your remote audience. Highlight reels cut quickly here because the venue photographs so consistently; same-day edits and 48-hour full galleries are both on the table.

Booking coverage at CENTREPIECE, answered

Does all that glass cause problems for photography?+

It's an asset with one caveat: direct afternoon sun can silhouette a stage placed against the glazing. We scout your floor plan in advance, advise on stage orientation if asked, and position cameras so the skyline works behind speakers rather than against them. Blinds solve the rest.

Can you photograph three concurrent sessions when the hall is divided?+

Yes. With the operable walls in, we either assign a shooter per zone or run a timed rotation matched to your program, guaranteeing every presenter a set of frames. Each zone gets its own exposure and colour treatment so the final gallery still looks like one event.

Where should we schedule our group photo?+

The terrace, 30–45 minutes before sunset, city behind you. Second choice is the Grand Hall glazing at midday, which gives a bright, even, all-weather result. We check sunset times against your agenda when we confirm the booking and flag the exact five-minute window to protect.

Can vehicles or large exhibits be photographed inside the hall?+

Absolutely — the logistics hub gives direct vehicle access to the event floor, so launches roll straight in. We photograph the install during bump-in, shoot the reveal live, then capture styled hero frames of the product under event lighting after guests depart.
