01 / Overview

Sunset does half the styling at Metropolis Events. Around 8pm in summer the nine-metre windows go molten, the CBD towers across the Yarra flick their lights on, and for roughly twenty minutes the Panorama Room becomes the easiest place in Melbourne to make 400 guests look like a film still. Our job is making sure the speeches, the cake cut or the CEO's toast isn't scheduled directly against those twenty minutes — and being in position when they arrive.

Timing an event to nine-metre windows

Perched on the upper level of Southgate, Metropolis runs on natural light by day and skyline by night, and the changeover hour is the whole game. We plan coverage backwards from civil twilight: couple portraits or executive groups on the all-weather terrace first, wide room shots as the glass turns blue, then interiors once the city becomes the backdrop. Guests photographed against those windows need lifted exposure and a touch of fill — handled quietly, it produces the frames people set as phone backgrounds.

Under the dome: galas in the Panorama Room

The 17-metre dome gives the Panorama Room a vertical drama most flat-ceilinged function rooms can't match, and we shoot up into it deliberately — wide establishing frames from the dance floor that show the full architecture over a seated gala of up to 402, or a cocktail crowd pushing 1,100 across the whole venue. Awards nights here get a locked camera on the stage, a second body working tables, and video coverage cut into a highlight reel with the skyline doing the closing shot.

The Aviary Room's art-deco intimacy

Not every brief needs the big room. The Aviary Room, with its art-deco bar and lounge seating, suits launches and private dinners where the coverage style is closer, quieter and more editorial — hands, glassware, the backlit brass of the bar.

Marble, mirrors and the first ten minutes

Metropolis Events dresses well in detail shots: marble surfaces, mirrored accents and styled tables all earn their place in the first ten minutes of coverage, before a single guest arrives, because that's the content venues, planners and stylists all want to share.

Metropolis Events: the practical questions

What time should our ceremony or speeches run for the best light?+

Work back from sunset. Terrace ceremonies photograph best 60–90 minutes before it; speeches sit comfortably after dark when the skyline carries the background. We'll map exact times to your date — December and June differ by almost three hours.

Can you photograph a full-venue cocktail event?+

Yes — at up to 1,100 guests across the Panorama Room, Aviary and terrace we run two photographers on planned circuits so sponsors, VIPs and every corner of the floor appear in the gallery. One shooter at that scale only ever photographs half a party.

Is the terrace usable for photos in winter?+

It's an all-weather space, so yes — and winter evenings bring the moodiest skyline of the year. We bring weather covers for the kit and keep terrace sessions to efficient ten-minute bursts so guests get the view without the wind chill.

Do you provide video as well as stills at Metropolis?+

Most clients book both. A single hybrid shooter suits intimate Aviary events; full galas and weddings get a dedicated videographer, with highlight films delivered inside a week and the photo gallery within 48 hours.
