The Timber Yard, Port Melbourne: Coverage Built for a Warehouse

01 / Overview

Once the band hits its first chorus, The Warehouse is all haze, festoon and silhouettes — 1,500 people in a room that started the day as a blank industrial shell. The Timber Yard at 351 Plummer Street is Port Melbourne's anything-goes venue, and that's precisely what makes it demanding to shoot: there is no house look. Every event builds its own world from rigging points and raw walls, and the coverage has to be planned around a production design that didn't exist a week earlier.

Shooting a blank canvas that changes every event

Because The Warehouse is fully riggable with high ceilings and serious load capacity, producers bring ambitious builds here — suspended installations, stage sets, projection, full theatrical lighting plots. We ask for the lighting and staging plan in advance and design coverage to it: where the trusses throw shadows, where the LED washes will sit on the colour wheel, which angles keep the build's scale in frame. Launches and festivals here get video-led coverage — roaming gimbal, a locked wide, drone exteriors where approved — because movement is what a warehouse party has that a ballroom never will.

From The Yard to the Wood Store: six spaces, one story

Big events at The Timber Yard usually flow across spaces: arrival drinks on the turf of The Yard under open sky, a seated dinner or plenary in The Warehouse (up to 1,100 guests), breakouts in the Wood Store's undercover gallery or The Workshop. We map the guest journey and leapfrog it — a photographer always one space ahead, so every reveal is covered from the front, not chased from behind. Golden hour in The Yard, with the industrial skyline behind long tables, is the single most reliable image of the venue.

Port Melbourne logistics, working in your favour

Two hundred-plus free on-site car parks and a genuinely truck-friendly site mean bump-in here is fast, which producers exploit with heavier builds — and which means our crew, extra bodies, and same-day edit station all arrive without a loading-dock ballet. Ten minutes from the CBD and around twenty from the airport, The Timber Yard hosts everything from corporate EOFY parties to multi-day expos, and our coverage scales the same way: one hybrid shooter for a 150-person dinner, a five-person photo and video unit for a festival.

Timber Yard shoots: what to know

Warehouse light is dark and colourful. Will faces survive?+

Yes — if we've seen the lighting plot. We shoot fast glass at high ISO and coordinate with your LD so at least one scene per formal moment keeps skin tones inside a printable range. The moody frames still happen; they're a choice, not an accident.

Can you film aerials over the site?+

The venue's open Yard and industrial surrounds suit drone work well, subject to CASA rules and Port Melbourne airspace approvals, which we arrange. Aerial establishing shots make Timber Yard highlight reels feel like festival aftermovies — most brand clients brief them in.

How do you cover an event spread across multiple spaces?+

With a movement plan, not more luck. We stagger shooters across the guest flow, assign each space its hero moments, and sync via comms. Nothing gets covered twice while something else gets missed — the usual multi-space failure.

Is same-day content possible somewhere this raw?+

Completely. We set an edit station in a meeting room, pull cards hourly, and deliver a social cut before your last bus leaves the car park. Brands running launches here typically post while the event is still trending.
