Photography & Video for Events at QAGOMA

01 / Overview

Champagne trays move down the Watermall while guests lean into the artworks, and somewhere between the water feature and the first speech is the frame that justifies hiring a photographer at all. Gallery events are unlike hotel events: the venue is the content, and the coverage has to honour both the art on the walls and the people in front of it.

Turbo 360 covers corporate dinners, sponsor launches, awards evenings and weddings across both QAGOMA buildings — the Queensland Art Gallery and the Gallery of Modern Art — at South Bank.

02 / QAGOMA

Two buildings, two entirely different shoots

QAG's Watermall is the formal stage: 475 square metres, seated dinners for 250 or 600 standing, with the water feature running through the middle of the room. It photographs like an architectural set — symmetrical, reflective, dramatic — so we work its long axis and let the reflections do half the work. Outside, the Sculpture Courtyard takes 150 for cocktails among lawns and a fountain, and is the natural spot for arrival coverage.

GOMA is looser and brighter. The Long Gallery and the Sue and Brian King River Room stretch across 730 square metres with towering ceilings and floor-to-ceiling glass to the river — 250 dining, up to 1,000 standing. Daylight functions there barely need supplementary light; evening ones turn the windows into a mirror, which we use deliberately for wide establishing shots. The Roof Terrace, with its skyline panorama, is where we take speakers and VIPs for two-minute portrait sessions between courses.

Shooting around art, not over it

Galleries impose real constraints and we treat them as part of the craft. No flash near sensitive works, no tripods blocking circulation, artwork reproduced incidentally rather than as the subject. Our teams shoot QAGOMA on fast, quiet mirrorless bodies — no shutter clatter during speeches in Cinema A, which seats 216 and doubles as a genuinely good keynote room with proper projection. For conferences that pair a Cinema A plenary with a River Room dinner, one crew covers both without re-rigging.

Video follows the same discipline: small rigs, available light where possible, and interviews framed against the river glass or the Watermall rather than a branded banner, because that's why you booked a gallery.

Deliverables that respect the occasion

Organisers get a 48-hour gallery as standard, colour-graded to hold both artwork accuracy and skin tones — a harder balance than it sounds under mixed gallery lighting. Highlight reels run 60–90 seconds and cut arrival, room, speeches and candids into something a cultural partner or sponsor will actually repost. Same-day social edits are available when a campaign launches that night.

What clients ask before a QAGOMA event

Are there photography restrictions inside the galleries?+

Yes — some exhibitions restrict photography entirely and flash is generally off-limits near works. We confirm the rules for your specific spaces with QAGOMA's events team beforehand and build the shot list around them, so nothing is left to negotiation on the night.

Which space photographs best for an evening gala?+

The Watermall for drama, the Long Gallery and River Room for scale and river views. If your guest list runs toward 1,000, GOMA's spaces carry the crowd; the Watermall's water feature makes 250-guest dinners feel far grander than the number suggests.

Can you shoot a daytime conference and evening dinner in one engagement?+

Easily — it's a common QAGOMA format. We cover a Cinema A or B session, capture headshots or sponsor content during the afternoon changeover, then photograph the dinner. One booking, one crew, one consistent gallery delivered within 48 hours.

Where do the best portraits happen?+

The GOMA Roof Terrace at dusk, with the city and river behind. It's weather-protected, so we can commit to it in the run sheet. Inside, the River Room's glass wall gives clean, even light for executive and couple portraits almost any time of day.
