QPAC Event & Performance Photography

01 / Overview

House lights drop, a spotlight finds the lectern, and two thousand faces in the Lyric Theatre turn toward a stage that was designed for opera but tonight belongs to a graduation, an awards ceremony or a corporate keynote. Shooting at QPAC means working to theatre rules — and getting theatre-grade images in return.

Turbo 360 photographs and films ceremonies, conferences, gala performances and foyer functions across the Queensland Performing Arts Centre's five venues at South Bank.

Shooting to stage light in the Lyric, Concert Hall and Playhouse

Stage lighting is the best and worst thing about QPAC. The 2,000-seat Lyric Theatre gives speakers a wash a hotel ballroom could never match, but contrast is brutal: metered wrong, faces glow and audiences vanish. We expose for the followspot, hold detail in the house, and shoot long glass from the mix position or a side box so the auditorium's sweep makes it into the frame. The Concert Hall — directly opposite South Brisbane station on Melbourne Street — rewards symmetrical wides from the circle; the Playhouse, on the Russell Street side facing the Parklands, suits tighter productions; and the Cremorne, QPAC's most intimate and flexible room with its riverside entrance, is where we shoot in-the-round formats and rehearsal coverage. The new 1,500-seat Glasshouse Theatre adds a fifth stage we're already being briefed on.

Ceremonies, foyer functions and the space between

QPAC events rarely stay in the auditorium. Pre-show drinks in the Lyric Theatre and Playhouse Lounge — 110 for cocktails, with river and cityscape views — need candid coverage before doors, and organisers routinely ask for a stage-managed group photo in the foyer before guests disperse. For graduations and awards nights we run a two-camera stage setup: one locked on the handshake or trophy mark, one roaming for reactions, so every recipient gets a clean, consistent frame. Video crews can multi-camera the whole ceremony, feed a live stream for families and interstate colleagues, and deliver a same-day highlight while the after-party is still going in the Green.

Theatre protocol, handled

Working QPAC means respecting bump-in schedules, staying out of sightlines, coordinating with the venue's production staff and never firing a flash during a live moment. Our photographers work silent shutters and pre-agreed positions, and we join your production meeting or tech run when the stakes justify it. Loading dock access, credentials, and where a camera may and may not stand are sorted before the day, not during it.

Before you book a QPAC shoot

Can you photograph during the actual ceremony or performance?+

Yes, within QPAC's and your production's rules — silent shutters, fixed positions, no flash. We agree positions with stage management in advance. For handshake-style ceremonies we lock one camera on the presentation mark so every graduate or winner gets an equivalent image.

Do you provide live streaming from the theatres?+

We do, subject to venue technical arrangements. Multi-camera coverage of a Lyric or Concert Hall ceremony can be streamed for remote families or offices and recorded for a post-event edit. We scope AV integration with QPAC's production team as part of the quote.

How fast can graduates or award winners see their photos?+

Standard delivery is a fully edited gallery within 48 hours. For ceremonies we can prioritise the stage sequence overnight, and a same-day social cut — winners, wides, reactions — is available if your comms team is publishing that evening.

Which foyer works best for a pre-show group photo?+

The Lyric Theatre and Playhouse Lounge, with the river behind the glass, is the strongest backdrop and holds about 110 comfortably. We schedule it before doors open, when the space is exclusively yours and the light outside still helps rather than mirrors.
