Working the Frangipani Ballroom's mirrors and moveable walls
The Frangipani Ballroom seats around 260 for a gala and holds up to 400 cocktail-style, with no pillars to fight and operable walls for splitting into breakouts. Those mirrored walls are the room's signature and its trap: they make a 250-seat dinner feel twice the size, but an unplanned flash bounce puts the photographer in your hero shot. We angle lighting deliberately and use the mirrors to layer candelabra and table styling into the frame. The light-filled Orchid Room boardroom on the Level 1 conference floor shoots cleanly for executive sessions.
Level 21: an onyx bar, a glass roof and the river behind everything
The Terrace is where Emporium Hotel South Bank stops behaving like a hotel and starts behaving like a location. Twenty-one floors up, the backlit onyx bar gives evening receptions a warm key light that flatters faces, and the retractable glass roof means a January storm doesn't cancel golden hour. Behind the balustrade sit South Bank Parklands and the Brisbane River — we schedule couple portraits and sponsor group shots about 40 minutes before sunset, when the water still reads blue and the CBD lights are coming up. Not everything at the Emporium is 400 people. The Reserve Wine Bar, styled like a 1920s speakeasy with a custom chandelier, wine wall and 5.4-metre projector screen, takes 80 for cocktails and suits product launches that want atmosphere over scale — we shoot it wide and moody, letting the backlit bar do the work. Belle Époque, the hotel's French brasserie, hosts long lunches and high teas for up to 50, all pastel tones and patisserie detail shots. How do you avoid appearing in the ballroom's mirrored walls?+
Careful positioning and lighting placed at oblique angles. We map reflection lines during setup, keep flashes off-axis and shoot stage moments from the corners where mirrors work for us — doubling the room's depth — rather than against us. You get the glamour of the mirrors without a tripod in your award presentation photos.
Can you film on the Terrace at night or in wet weather?+
Yes. The retractable glass roof keeps receptions running through rain, and the onyx bar's backlighting plus city glow give us enough ambient light to film interviews and roaming coverage without rigging heavy lights. For live crosses or hybrid sessions we run a compact streaming kit that suits the rooftop's footprint.
